Mayo’s new deal calls for him to make $4.5 million in 2015, which is fully guaranteed, according to Rapoport’s source. He can make up to $6 million if he hits incentives in the new deal, which also includes a pair of option years.

The agreement can save the team nearly $6 million in cap space in 2015 under the new deal, which reduces his cap hit from nearly $10.3 million to a reported $4.5 million. The team had leverage to ask Mayo for a restructure coming off a season ending knee injury, and the money freed up with the new deal could go towards long term deals for Nate Solder, Chandler Jones and/or Jamie Collins.

The Patriots didn’t release Mayo’s deal prior to free agency because he had a $4.5 million injury guarantee that the team would have had to pay if he was cut before he was cleared as fully healthy. He could not restructure his deal and reduce his cap number until he was deemed healthy.

Mayo has 756 career tackles and 10 career sacks over seven seasons, all with the team that drafted him 10th overall in the 2008 NFL Draft. He was a First Team All-Pro in 2010 and has been named to the Pro Bowl twice.
