Maine little leaguer promises ‘big daddy hacks,’ delivers
Meet Richie Gilboy.
He’s the catcher for Maine’s Little League baseball state champions, South Portland American. He bats left-handed. According to the Portland Press Herald, Gilboy once ran “into and through” an unlocked chainlink fence gate to catch a foul ball behind home plate. His friends call him Ricardo.
Also, he takes “big daddy hacks.”

That introduction came before South Portland’s win against Vermont on Thursday to move on to the New England regional semifinals. And boy, did Gilboy deliver on it during the game.

His monster solo home run into the trees gave South Portland an early 6-0 lead Thursday afternoon. They hung on to win 8-5, setting up a matchup against Goffstown, New Hampshire.
If they win Friday, and then beat Fairfield, Connecticut in the New England regional championship game Saturday, South Portland will qualify for the international Little League Word Series in Williamsport, Pennsylvania.
According to the Press Herald, they would be just the fourth Maine team in the 70-year history of the event to make it to Williamsport. And the first to bring “big daddy hacks.”
