Red Sox’ Roman Anthony leaves game in 2nd inning due to right wrist discomfort

Anthony was replaced by Masataka Yoshida in left field after appearing to hurt his wrist on a check swing.

Red Sox interim manager Chad Tracy said there were no plans to relocate Roman Anthony from the No. 3 spot in the batting order. Anthony, who hit third Friday night against the Astros, entered with a .208 batting average with a .339 on-base percentage and a .292 slugging mark.

The hits keep on coming for the Red Sox.

Boston outfielder Roman Anthony left Monday’s game against the Detroit Tigers with what the club deemed as “right wrist discomfort.”

Anthony suffered the ailment during his lone at-bat of the evening. While up at the plate against Detroit pitcher Tyler Holton, he fouled off a pitch on a check swing and flexed his right hand in discomfort.

Both interim manager Chad Tracy and Red Sox head athletic trainer Brandon Henry came out to speak with Anthony, who took a few practice swings before staying in the game. Anthony eventually grounded into a fielder’s choice just two pitches later.

Despite playing in the field in the bottom of the first inning, Anthony was pulled from the game in the subsequent inning, with Masataka Yoshida replacing him at left field.

Anthony, much like the Red Sox as a whole, has had a season to forget up to this point.

The 21-year-old outfielder entered Monday’s game in Detroit batting .231 with one home run, five RBI, and a .681 OPS through 29 games.

Despite his standing as one of the top young players in baseball, Anthony has been hindered by the injury bug since the end of last season.

Anthony’s breakout year in 2025 was cut short in early September after he suffered an oblique strain that ruled him out for the remainder of the year — including Boston’s brief playoff appearance during the Wild Card round against the Yankees.

In late April, Anthony also missed four games due to a nagging back issue.

Anthony’s early hook stands as the latest injury setback by the Red Sox, who also had to pull starter Ranger Suarez after four scoreless innings of work on Sunday.

Some of the players currently on the injured list for the Red Sox include Garrett Crochet (shoulder inflammation), Sonny Gray (hamstring strain), Justin Slaten (oblique strain), Patrick Sandoval (biceps), Triston Casas (patellar tendon surgery, abdominal strain), Kutter Crawford (flexor irritation), Romy Gonzalez (shoulder), Johan Oviedo (flexor strain), and others.
