David Ortiz, Suspended One Game for Bumping Umpire, to Appeal

Red Sox slugger David Ortiz has been suspended for one game and fined for bumping home plate umpire John Tumpane following being ejected from Sunday’s game against the Orioles, Major League Baseball announced on Tuesday. Ortiz is appealing the suspension and will play until the appeal process is complete.

Ortiz was thrown out of the game after arguing a checked-swing call made by third base umpire Jerry Meals. Ortiz disputed the call and was ejected by Tumpane with the Sox down, 5-3.

As for Tuesday night’s game in Tampa Bay, Ortiz was penciled in as the starter at DH and batting third before the discipline was announced.
