Not a good start
Time hasn’t healed any wounds here as far as Sox fans and Johnny Damon are concerned. When he strode to the plate in the top of the first, the boos were as loud as ever this season.
Damon then proceeded to lace a triple to center off Jason Johnson, which really could have been scored a double and an error on Coco Crisp, who bobbled the ball. “There goes the no-hitter,” remarked one writer up here.
Damon scored when Derek Jeter laced a single to center.
No matter how you slice it, it’s got to be tough being Johnson today, knowing that no matter how well you pitch, you’re nearly assured to be demoted after the game when the Red Sox activate Keith Foulke. And he’s not exactly off to an encouraging start either. He’s allowed hits to the first three batters he’s faced so far.
As you might expect with Yankees-Red Sox, the press box is bursting with media members. Red Sox personnel were forced to set up workstations in the normally underused media workroom off to the back of the press box, where folks can watch the game on TV.
Eighty-nine degrees our game-time temperature.
