Ayo Edebiri drops a nostalgic Fung Wah bus reference on ‘Today’ show

“The Bear” star shouted out the Boston-to-New York bus reigniting memories of the low-cost ride.

Fung Wah bus

Ayo Edebiri just gave a shoutout to a very specific piece of Boston travel lore: the Fung Wah bus.

The Boston-born Emmy-winning actress and comedian, best known for her role as Sydney Adamu on “The Bear,” brought up the now-defunct bus line during a “Today” show appearance Friday promoting her Broadway debut in “Proof.”

While talking about how her parents helped nurture her love of the arts, Edebiri said she and her mother would take the Fung Wah bus to New York — a line that drew laughs from the audience.

“Shoutout if you know what that is,” she said. “We would literally take the $15 bus, and we would stand in line, and we would try to rush shows and get tickets.”

Edebiri said those trips “changed my life.”

For years, Fung Wah carried passengers between Boston and New York for as little as $15, making it a go-to option for budget travelers, college students, and anyone willing to accept a little uncertainty for a cheap ride. The buses were fast, affordable, and popular. They were also known for breakdowns, safety concerns, and the kind of travel stories people still remember years later.

Still, for a certain generation of Boston-to-New York travelers, the Fung Wah was part of the experience. It was cheap enough to justify the risk and memorable enough to become local legend.
