Tired of potholes rattling your car? In Leominster, that rough ride could score you a free cup of coffee — if you report the problem, that is.
The city of Leominster has relaunched its annual “Coffee for Potholes” campaign to encourage residents to report potholes in exchange for a complimentary drink from one of several local coffee shops partnering with the city.
The Leominster Department of Public Works announced the campaign on its social media April 16. Since then, the city has given 30 free coffee passes to people who have reported potholes, Mayor Dean Mazzarella told Boston.com.
To receive the free drink, residents must first report a pothole by calling DPW, and then can visit the mayor’s office at City Hall during standard business hours to collect a free drink card from one of the participating shops. Only one card can be issued per person, regardless of how many potholes are reported, according to city officials.
The coffee shops involved are Aroma Joe’s Coffee, LOV’N DONUTS, Main Street Gift & Cafe, and ROOTS Natural Foods.
Mazzarella said the offer only covers repairs within Leominster city limits.
The campaign in Leominster has been running during the spring season for the last eight years due to its success, Mazzarella said.
Last year, the department fixed more than 5,000 potholes, according to data released on its website.
Mazzarella said residents’ engagement has brought positive, enjoyable energy into the matter.
“It’s meant to be interactive and have some fun with it. That’s the whole point,” he said. “You take something that’s not exactly a fun thing, like potholes, and you get people engaged in it. Next thing you know you’re having fun and getting coffee.”
