Secretary of State William Galvin’s office released a new report this month detailing just how much it cost to facilitate mail-in-voting this election season and how popular the option was.

In total, slightly more than 34% of voters who cast a ballot in the general election did so through a mail-in ballot.

2024 election:

Massachusetts spent just over $8 million to administer mail-in voting for the primary and general elections in 2024. This figure excludes costs associated with printing ballots and envelopes, assembling ballot kits, and reimbursing local election officials for unfunded local mandates, according to the report.

About $4 million alone was spent on postage for voters to return their primary and general election ballots.

Of these, 520,056 were cast by mail. Another 28,908 ballots were cast during in-person early voting, while 292,976 were cast in polling places on Sept. 3.

In the general election 3,512,930 ballots were cast in total. This represents an overall voter turnout of 68.3%.

Of those ballots cast in the general election, 1,203,106 were cast by mail. Another 597,029 were cast in-person during early voting, while 1,712,795 were cast in polling places on Nov. 5.
