Braintree police chief to retire in wake of evidence room scandal
Braintree Police Chief Russell Jenkins will retire next month after an audit revealed that cash, drugs, and guns in the department’s evidence room had disappeared, The Boston Globe reports.
“It has been an honor and a privilege to serve as Chief of the Braintree Police Department these last four years,” Jenkins wrote in a letter to Mayor Joseph Sullivan.
The chief will step down on Oct. 7.
The audit of the department’s evidence room, which was released last week, revealed thousands of dollars, pieces of drug evidence, and firearms vanished from police custody. The scandal has placed hundreds of drug cases in Braintree at risk of being thrown out.
