Will the Charles River soon offer a swimming area?

Imagine a place along the Charles River where you can lay in the sun, splash around in the water, and cool off with friends and family.

The Charles River Conservancy released plans Tuesday to create a public swimming facility on the Charles River where you can do just that.

The conservancy released a 74-page feasibility study outlining a spot along the Charles it wants to craft into a swimming facility, reports The Boston Globe. The proposal calls for a floating dock near North Point Park with an enclosed area where people can splash and swim. The spot is on the Boston-Cambridge line, not far from the Museum of Science. It will offer views of the Zakim Bridge.

“One of the reasons we love this location is that you can get there in so many ways. You can bike there, you can walk there, you can take the T there,” Jennifer Gilbert, chairwoman of the conservancy’s Swimmable Charles committee, told the Globe. “It could be as easy as walking out your door . . . and going for a swim.”

Water quality in the river remains an issue, however, with officials saying the river must meet acceptable swimming standards for the project to proceed.

The conservancy launched an Indiegogo.com campaign with the hope of raising $25,000 to pay for the first phase of the project.
