The number of Class A, or ‘license to carry,’ gun permits issued in Massachusetts last year increased by 12 percent, a significant jump compared to previous years, according to a Boston Globe report.

Of the state’s 351 cities and towns, all but five saw an increase in Class A licenses due to the anticipation of a gun control bill that would make the state’s firearms laws more strict. The cities of Lowell, Quincy, and Boston were among the communities that saw the greatest increases.

The new legislation, passed in August, tightened the requirements for applicants to obtain a Firearm Identification Card, which allows holders to possess and transport a shotgun or rifle.
