Report: Boston Police and Fire Departments Aren’t Diverse Enough
A new city report reveals that Boston’s fire department is 72 percent white and its police department is 66 percent white, according to The Boston Globe. In fact, of the city’s nearly 17,000 full- and part-time employees, 58 percent are white while African-Americans, Hispanics, and Asians make up 53 percent of the city’s population.
Because City Hall does not reflect Boston’s increasingly diverse population, Mayor Martin J. Walsh is vowing to hire a more diverse staff for the city.
Walsh’s new Office of Diversity compiled the 28-page report that analyzes the municipal payroll. The study is scheduled to be released today.
