Man Charged in Murder of Chelsea Woman Struck by Stray Bullet
A suspect was arrested overnight in the death of Katerin Gomez, 35, a mother of three who was killed by an errant bullet that struck her as she stood in the window of her Chelsea home early Saturday morning.
Hector Ramires, 20, pleaded not guilty to murder charges at his arraignment Tuesday in Chelsea District Court. He hid behind his lawyer’s jacket throughout the proceedings, according to The Boston Globe.
Judge Matthew J. Nestor ordered Ramires to be held without bail, and revoked his bail on a pending case in Suffolk Superior Court.
Gomez was looking out of the second-floor window of her Shawmut Avenue home when a stray bullet fired during an altercation between two groups outside hit her just after midnight Saturday. She died at the scene.
In court, Suffolk Assistant District Attorney David Fredette said that the bullet was the only one fired by Ramires when he and one other person confronted a group on the street outside of Gomez’s home, The Globe reports. She was not the intended target.
Gomez wasn’t the only victim of fatal gunfire in Chelsea early Saturday morning: Police are still investigating the death of Juan Rodriguez, 36, of Lynn, who was killed after an argument inside the French Naturalization Club on Spencer Avenue. He was rushed to Massachusetts General Hospital, where he was pronounced dead, according to WBZ.
The two shootings happened within 80 minutes of each other, The Globe reports.
