Two Massachusetts health care giants came out on top in U.S. News & World Report’s latest hospital rankings, which deemed Massachusetts General and Brigham and Women’s hospitals among the best in the country.

The annual report included MGH and BWH on the “honor roll” of the top 20 best-of-the-best U.S. medical centers, citing factors such as patient outcomes, staffing levels, and patient experience. The two Mass General Brigham hospitals also tied for first place among the best hospitals in Massachusetts, trailed by Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center in third.

“This year’s rankings, combined with the progress we are seeing in key quality metrics, demonstrate an exciting opportunity to further elevate patient care as we become a truly integrated system of care,” MGB President and CEO Dr. Anne Klibanski said in a statement. “We are deeply grateful to our staff who are the heart of our healthcare system and whose devotion to our patients earned these recognitions and inspires us each day.”

General took the top spot for psychiatry, followed by Belmont’s McLean Hospital in second place. The Brigham also ranked first in obstetrics and gynecology and third in diabetes and endocrinology.

The Bay State also flexed its muscles in a national ranking of children’s hospitals released last fall, with Boston Children’s Hospital snagging a spot on the U.S. News honor roll in pediatrics.
