‘The End of the Tour’ trailer: Here’s Jason Segel as David Foster Wallace
The upcoming film about author David Foster Wallace finally has a trailer. The End of the Tour, which premiered at Sundance earlier this year, stars Jason Segal as Wallace and Jesse Eisenberg as Rolling Stone journalist David Lipsky, the former Emerson adjunct professor’s companion on a five-day roadtrip at the height of Wallace’s Infinite Jest fame in 1996.
The article was never published, but the transcripts from the trip became the basis for Lipsky’s 2010 novel, Although of Course You End Up Becoming Yourself: A Road Trip with David Foster Wallace, on which the film is based.
Lawyers for the family and literary trust of Wallace, who committed suicide in 2008, denounced the film last April, noting the late author would have “never agreed that those saved transcripts could later be repurposed as the basis of a movie.’’
Early reviews for the film, however, are generally positive. Vulture’s Bilge Ebiri called Segel’s performance, “thoroughly immersed, deeply intelligent,’’ though others (The Guardian, Variety) say the film makes some assumptions about viewers’ knowledge of Wallace’s life and work.
The End of the Tour opens in limited release July 31.
