WWE superstar John Cena, who grew up in West Newbury, stopped by The Tonight Show Wednesday to promote the upcoming WrestleMania 33 on April 2 and to talk with host Jimmy Fallon about his childhood.
“My dad was the absolute biggest wrestling fan of all, and I was introduced to WWE at a very young age,” Cena said. “I had four brothers. My dad was never a sports guy, but he was a pro wrestling guy, so we were allowed to beat the heck out of each other if wrestling was on.”
Cena talked about how he would wrestle with his brothers on the concrete floor of their basement (“The floor was hard, so you wanted to win.”), while Fallon showed the audience a photo of Cena at age six holding his first championship belt.

Cena and Fallon also took part in the “Whisper Challenge,” a recurring Tonight Show segment during which the host and guest take turns trying to read each other’s lips while listening to loud music. Much like he has in the ring over the last decade as the face of the WWE, Cena dominated, easily guessing words like “appletini.”
