Tropical storm watch issued for Rhode Island coast, Cape Cod
The National Weather Service has issued a tropical storm watch for parts of the New England coast, including Rhode Island and Cape Cod, beginning Sunday afternoon through late Monday.

The areas issued in the watch could possibly see wind gusts up to 50 mph and an inch or two of rain, according to Bill Simpson, a spokesman with the National Weather Service in Boston.
As Hermine, the weather system formerly designated as a hurricane and now listed as a tropical storm, makes its way up the coast, it will sit south of Cape Cod, causing prolonged winds and drive heavy surf, Simpson said.
“That’s the real issue right now,” he said of the potentially dangerous surf conditions.
He said how close the storm gets to the Cape will determine how strong the winds become. Depending on the storm’s movement, the storm conditions could extend into midweek, he said.
Simpson said the Boston area, not contained in the tropical storm watch, may see gusts of 30 mph and a half an inch of rain.
