N.J. woman accused of trying to scam One Fund Boston

A Linden, N.J., woman is the third person to be charged with trying to defraud One Fund Boston, which was created to help survivors of the Boston Marathon terror bombings that killed three and wounded more than 250 people, officials said Friday.

Iris Gamble, 44, was charged with third-degree attempted theft by deception, fourth-degree fraud, and fourth-degree creating fraudulent documents, Union County Prosecutor Grace H. Park said in a statement.

According to Park, on June 11, Gamble submitted an application to the One Fund claiming she was injured during the April 15 bombings. She also claimed she was treated for her injuries in a Newark, N.J. hospital, the statement said.

But the application was flagged by One Fund officials after noticing that the application had numerous irregularities and misspellings. Those officials notified the Massachusetts attorney general, who referred the matter to Park’s office, which launched its own investigation.

“Our investigation revealed that the defendant was not in Boston on the day of the bombings,’’ Park said in a statement. “The defendant wasted little time in trying to profit from the generosity and kindness of others.’’

Officials did not detail the amount of money that Gamble allegedly tried to claim, but she did not receive any funds.

Gamble is scheduled to appear in Union County Superior Court Aug. 16.
