Charlestown man charged with attempted murder after shootout with Florida police

A Charlestown man involved in a shootout with police officers in Daytona Beach, Florida on Saturday night told police that he shot his pregnant girlfriend and he wished police would just kill him, according to Daytona Beach police documents.

Marvin Calvin Jones, 22, of 451 Main Street in Charlestown, is being charged with the attempted first-degree murder of a police officer. His girlfriend, who was not named by police, was shot and hospitalized with serious injuries. Jones has not been charged in connection with her shooting, according to a police spokesman.

Jones is also wanted in New Hampshire on charges of robbery, according to police. A spokesman for the Lebanon police department said that they had not yet spoken with Daytona Beach Police, but believe Jones is the same man wanted in an armed robbery at the Baymont Inn on Jan. 10.

According to a police statement and documents, at 8:23 p.m. Saturday night, Daytona Beach Police got a call about a man sitting in a gold Lincoln in the pick-up area at Daytona International Airport waving a gun.

An officer responding to the call saw the car and tried to pull it over. The driver got out of his car and started shooting at the officer, who shot back, according to police.

The man got back into his car and tried to flee, but crashed his car near the Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University.

The driver got back out of his car and began shooting at police, according to documents. One officer hit him with a cruiser, and the man took off on foot, turning to shoot at officers who were chasing him, police said. Officers fired back, hitting the man in the left hand, left forearm, right shoulder and back, according to police.

While police were arresting Jones, he allegedly told them, “I shot my wife, my wife has been shot, and I wish you guys would have just killed me.’’

The woman who was injured is Jones’ girlfriend, not his wife, according to police. Police said she is pregnant and Jones is the father. She was found in the car Jones was driving after he was arrested.

None of the police officers involved in the shootout were injured. They have all been placed on paid administrative leave in accordance with policy, according to police.

Police are still investigating exactly how Jones’ girlfriend was shot, according to Detective John Creamer.

“The investigation has a great deal of moving parts and we are very much in the thick of the investigation. We do anticipate that he will face additional charges in the future,’’ he wrote in an email. “We are working to determine how the woman was shot and why.’’

As of Sunday morning, according to Creamer, Jones was still being treated at Halifax Health in Florida, though a hospital spokesperson could not confirm that Jones is a patient there. No arraignment date was immediately available.
