Happy birthday, Quincy Market! The market’s grand opening took place on Aug. 26, 1826 — 189 years ago.

The market was named after Boston’s second mayor, Josiah Quincy, who famously organized its construction without any tax or debt. On its 150th birthday on Aug. 26, 1976, Bostonians celebrated a grand reopening of the renovated market.
