Day 1: Your first stop will be the surprisingly modern Mill Street Inn in Newport, R.I. A former 19th-century sawmill, the inn is walking distance to several shops and restaurants as well as Newport Harbor. On warm mornings breakfast is served on a rooftop patio (top right) overlooking the water.
Rates: $275 to $545, includes breakfast, Internet access, and on-site parking.

Day 1: After checking in, head over to the award-winning Brick Alley Pub and Restaurant on Thames Street for dinner and drinks. A local favorite, the restaurant is in the heart of downtown Newport, a short, pleasant walk from the inn and seconds from the water.
