The MBTA Commuter Rail experienced continued delays and service changes Thursday morning due to ongoing snow cleanup, the agency said.
The MBTA alerted riders of issues on the Fairmount, Fall River/New Bedford, Fitchburg, Framingham/Worcester, Haverhill, Kingston, Lowell, Newburyport/Rockport, and Providence/Stoughton lines.
A spokesperson from Keolis Commuter Services, the MBTA’s Commuter Rail operator, said the delays earlier Thursday morning on the Worcester line were caused by a motor vehicle on the right of way. The vehicle has since been cleared.
All other delays and cancellations were weather-related, the spokesperson said.
Crews are continuing snow cleanup efforts to ensure Commuter Rail lines operate safely, as snow and ice buildup have negative effects on railroad infrastructure, according to the spokesperson.
“Cleanup efforts are continuing, with nearly three feet of snow along some parts of the network,” the spokesperson said.
Boston-area commuters, in particular those on the commuter rail, have been struggling throughout this particularly harsh winter. In a Boston.com reader poll after the punishing snowstorm in late January, 59% of respondents expressed disapproval of MBTA services during and after the poor weather.
“Commuter rail out of north station fell apart Tuesday afternoon with multiple last minute rush hour cancellations and trains running up to an hour late,” wrote Rob C. from Ipswich at that time. “MBTA cited ‘storm impact.’ Very little helpful info, lots of stranded commuters. Disaster.”
