There are countless small towns across America worth exploring this year, but two in New England are among the very best in the nation, according to Country Living.

The publication recently released a list of America’s 10 best small towns for 2025 and included Rockport, Massachusetts and Tamworth, New Hampshire.

“From blink-and-you-miss-it-sized mountain towns to soulful Southern spots rapidly gaining steam, these happenin’ hamlets invite you to slow your pace and fill your cup,” wrote the publication.

Cape Ann’s Rockport boasts the famous red fishing shack Motif No. 1, called one of the most-painted buildings in the world.

“In Rockport, a former shipbuilding-town-turned-arts-haven at the tip of the Cape, you’ll be greeted with waterside pathways, postcard-perfect streets, and the Rockport Art Association & Museum, where visitors can take in rotating exhibits of Cape Ann scenery or attend classes on painting and sketching,” wrote Country Living.

Tamworth, located between New Hampshire’s White Mountains and Lakes Region and a former retreat for authors E.E. Cummings and Henry James, has a “way-back-in-time vibe” and offers trails, theater, and Tamworth Distilling, wrote Country Living.

“Visitors can drop in for tastings, shop the Mercantile, attend workshops, or arrange for a private cocktail class,” wrote the publication about the distillery. “It all amounts to a one-of-a-kind experience—and it’s drawing an increasingly international crowd.”

Tamworth Distilling has been named among the best distilleries in the U.S. by USA Today readers.
