Breakwater Inn, a historic waterfront hotel on the Maine coast, reopened this week with renovated guest rooms and new dining options.

The boutique hotel, one of Kennebunkport’s oldest inns, is perched where the Kennebunk River feeds into the Atlantic Ocean and two miles from downtown Kennebunkport. The hotel reopened on July 1 after an extensive renovation of the property’s original 1880s cottage architecture.

Guests stay in 35 rooms across two buildings — 20 rooms and suites with king and queen beds are located in the original Inn Building, most with private decks, and 15 rooms and suites with king and queen beds are in the Harbor Building. Guests can also stay at River Top Cottage, which offers a deep soaking whirlpool and panoramic water views.

New restaurant and bar venues on the property are Port Fish & Chophouse, Mabel’s Pantry, and Tin Bar.

The hotel’s lobby has glass doors that open to a deck and lawn along the coast, complete with Adirondack chairs, and “an unrivaled view for guests to watch lobster boats come in from the day at sea,” according to the team.

The renovation team carefully preserved the hotel’s historic charm and maritime character, and Kennebunk-based interior design firm Hurlbutt Designs redid the rooms in “soothing color palettes and classically styled fabrics,” wrote the team. Each private bath includes Bethel white stone vanities, silk and terry spa-style robes, and amenities by Gilchrist and Soames.

Mabel’s Pantry, directly across the street from the hotel in Mabel’s House, is the hotel’s new waterfront breakfast restaurant and serves up dishes such as avocado toast, eggs Benedict, and buttermilk pancakes from 7:30 to 11 a.m.

Tin Bar, on the ground level of the Breakwater Inn, serves tinned fish and other appetizers, classic cocktails, and international and domestic beers.

Travelers can order seafood and steaks with a waterfront view at Port Fish & Chophouse, which also has a full bar. Guests can enjoy a happy hour between 3 and 5 p.m. and the restaurant’s dinner menu includes Maine mussels, brown butter halibut, Wagyu burgers, and lobster served several different ways.

Guests can stroll to downtown Kennebunkport, full of art galleries, cafes, and boutiques in Dock Square or walk Parsons Way featuring expansive ocean views.

The summer starting rate is $319 per night.
