FIFA World Cup organizers have announced that bus service will be available in Massachusetts during this summer’s match days — but it comes at a premium price.
Thousands of soccer fans will be making their way from Boston to Foxborough this summer for the seven World Cup matches being hosted at Gillette Stadium, rebranded as Boston Stadium for the international competition. The MBTA has already offered round-trip Commuter Rail tickets in the neighborhood of $80, but the high demand has led World Cup officials to launch the Boston Stadium Express Bus Service.
On match days, shuttle buses will run to the stadium from a plethora of hotels in the Greater Boston area. Round-trip tickets, which are priced by distance, start at $25 but reach as high as $95.
So far, high prices haven’t hurt transportation ticket sales. Last week, more than 17,450 round-trip Commuter Rail tickets were sold in their first day of availability, shattering the previous record for a special event MBTA train.
Private group transportation is also being offered by Yankee Line, a Boston bus charter company. Charter requests for match day transportation can be filled out here.
On match days, bus services will start three hours before kickoff and depart 30 minutes after the final whistle, according to officials. Just like the special Commuter Rail trains, they are available by advance booking only and require proof of a match ticket to board.
In addition to the trains and buses, attendees commuting by car are required to pre-book stadium parking, officials said. Informal drop-offs and pick-ups are not allowed, and rideshare drives will need to queue in a dedicated area.
