Lucky seven

Reader Steve Forti has pointed out a little inaccuracy in the recent claim that Josh Beckett and Curt Schilling are the first Red Sox pitchers to start a season 3-0 since Tim Wakefield and Vaughn Eshelman in 1995.

“I was just wondering why everyone keeps saying that Schilling and Beckett are the first pair of Sox pitchers to start a season 3-0 since Wakefield and Eschelman in 1995. Both Pedro and John Burkett started the 2002 season at 7-0 each. Why is this forgotten about?”

Good point. The only thing I can figure is that the stat (reported in the Boston Globe, and during last Sunday’s game on NESN) should specify “in their first three starts.” Martinez and Burkett each had two no-decisions in his seven-win stretch.
