Patriots reportedly exercise Christian Gonzalez’s fifth-year option for 2027 season

Exercising a fifth-year option keeps Gonzalez under contract in New England through the 2027 season.

The Patriots are reportedly extending Christian Gonzalez’s contract.

Well, at least for one more season.

According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, the Patriots exercised the fifth-year option on Gonzalez’s contract — an expected move that sets up the star cornerback for a solid pay raise two years from now.

Gonzalez remains on his rookie contract in New England after the Patriots drafted him 17th overall in the 2023 NFL Draft — with the upcoming 2026 season standing as the final year of that rookie contract.

But, all NFL clubs have the option to exercise a fifth year on contracts for first-round picks — keeping them under team control for another season before free agency, albeit with a solid bump in pay for that fifth year.

Gonzalez, who is expected to count for a $4.8 million cap hit in 2026, will see his cap hit jump up to $18.1 million in 2027 as a result of that fifth-year option.

Exercising that fifth-year option is more of a formality at this stage of the offseason, especially for such a key player on New England’s roster like Gonzalez.

Even if Tuesday’s news keeps the talented cornerback in Foxborough for at least another two seasons, the onus remains on the Patriots to work out a long-term contract extension with Gonzalez — one that could make him the highest-paid corner in the league moving forward.

Speaking at the NFL Meetings last month, Mike Vrabel stressed the need for the Patriots to work out a new contract with Gonzalez beyond the next two seasons.

“We want to make sure that we draft extremely well, and then we identify the guys that we want to keep with us and that have earned long-term extensions with us,” Vrabel said. “And Christian, Gonzo is certainly one of those players, but I can’t comment on the negotiations.”

Gonzalez — who earned All-Pro honors in 2024 — continued to raise his stock during last season’s unexpected run to Super Bowl LX. Across four playoff games, Gonzalez recorded an interception, a sack, and broke up seven total passes.

After sealing New England’s AFC title with a fourth-quarter interception against the Broncos in the fourth quarter, he saved his best game for the Super Bowl against Seattle, finishing with three pass breakouts that took two potential Seahawks touchdowns off the board.
