Christian Gonzalez saw the ball floating toward him, slowing his backpedal just enough to jump in front of Denver’s Marvin Mims Jr. and snag the game-sealing interception.
There were snowflakes falling in Denver, but Gonzalez’s focus on the ball could not be broken. He gave the Patriots the ball back with a 10-7 lead right before the two minute warning in the fourth quarter. It was a pivotal play that allowed New England to run out the clock and earn a spot in the Super Bowl.
Gonzalez said he was so locked in that he couldn’t see the snow during the play.
“At that point, the ball is in the air, I was playing off so I was able to see it pretty early, which doesn’t happen too much,” Gonzalez said. “Most of the time I’m always in press [coverage], but I was off and saw the ball and at that point it’s like I’m playing receiver again. So, just find the ball, go up and get it at the highest point, secure it, and bring it down.”
Patriots head coach Mike Vrabel said he began to notice something different in Gonzalez during the latter half of the season. He missed the first three games of the season with a hamstring injury.
His talent was never in question. Gonzalez made his first Pro Bowl this season and has been considered one of the league’s best cornerbacks pretty much since the Patriots drafted him in 2023.
But he has taken his game to another level recently. He didn’t allow any catches in the playoff opener against the Chargers. He was dominant again during the divisional-round against the Texans.

On Sunday, Mims burned Gonzalez for a 52-yard catch, the longest completion of the day for either team. But Gonzalez was lights-out the rest of the way and wound up making the play that sealed the low-scoring win for New England.
“It just says that he’s been playing really, really good football,” Vrabel said. “Sometimes you get beat, the best ones do. About six or eight weeks ago, I can’t remember when, I saw a different Gonzo. Something went off, it changed.”
“Maybe the Ravens game or something, I just noticed a different player, a different person. He’s just so talented and I appreciate every one of them. He can certainly be elite. Your best players have to make those types of plays in championship games.”
Gonzalez said he was just focused on making the most of his opportunities.
“I just want to make the plays that come my way,” Gonzalez said. “As a corner, as a DB, you don’t get too many chances, but when your number is called and you’re somebody that the team looks to to make plays, it’s big time to be able to do it. Shout-out to [Vrabel] and the coaching staff. They get us in the right positions, the right calls, and get us ready to go for Sundays.”
Next year will be the last one on Gonzalez’s rookie deal. The club has an option for 2027 before he hits free-agency. The price for a top-tier cornerback is often an expensive one. Getting one in the draft the way the Patriots did with Gonzalez doesn’t happen every day.
“That boy is a dog,” defensive lineman Milton Williams said. “He’s here for a reason, he’s fixing to get paid, and he won this game. He closed it out for us when he needed it.”
The Patriots will eventually have to decide what to do with Gonzalez long-term, but for now, there is another game to focus on.
The Patriots are back in the Super Bowl for the first time since they beat the Rams in Super Bowl LIII seven years ago, a fact that hadn’t even hit Gonzalez yet while he was speaking at his postgame press conference.
“I don’t think I’ve fully processed it yet,” Gonzalez said. “Came out here and got a big team win. Everybody helped to win, offense, defense, special teams. It was a lot of fun, playoff football, the games are always going to be close, the two best teams in the AFC when it comes down to it.”
“Thought it was pretty cool that it started snowing, it was pretty fitting, a Denver home game for an AFC championship,” he added. “I thought that was pretty cool. I’m just so proud of the guys. We’ll enjoy this one tonight and we’ll move on to whoever wins and be ready for next week or two weeks.”
