On Wednesday, the Patriots released their annual video announcement of the upcoming season’s schedule.

New England used the opportunity to start a competition between four players in the egg drop challenge.

Josh Dobbs hosted the competition because, as DeMario Douglas said, Dobbs is “a science type guy.” Douglas, Robert Spillane, Marcus Jones and Christian Gonzalez all brought their devices to keep their egg safe to claim the egg drop trophy.

Of the four players to drop the egg, only one failed to keep his safe.

Gonzalez attempted to keep his egg safe by putting padding inside a football and placing the egg inside. He used rubber bands to keep the ball together. The football was in a box for extra protection.

Despite his “10 out of 10” confidence level, the egg cracked after a hard smack onto the ground.

“It broke, man,” said Gonzalez. “But you know that’s part of football. It might break, but you’re going to break back.”

As the audience watched the replay of the box hitting the ground, the first group of the schedule appeared on the screen. It revealed that New England will play the Carolina Panthers on Sept. 28, New Orleans Saints on Oct. 12, the Atlanta Falcons on Nov. 2, and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Nov. 9.

Douglas was the winner of the drop, where he put his egg in a box attached by balloons.

“What better way to bring out the schedule release without balloons?” Douglas said before the drop.

Dobbs asked Douglas about the possibility of the egg floating up instead of down.

“I think it’s going to float down. I mean, after all the helium is out,” said Douglas.

The landing from the balloon was the softest landing and kept the egg safe. After cheering, Douglas asked Dobbs his thoughts.

“I thought it was flawless execution. That looked good to me. … I’d get in that. If I was an egg, I’d get in that.”

“So basically, this is a rocket ship,” said Douglas.

On the replay, another group of games were revealed. They were the Las Vegas Raiders on Sept. 7, the Tennessee Titans on Oct. 19 and the New York Giants on Dec. 1.

Spillane and Jones also kept their eggs protected during their experiment and had more of the schedule released.

Spillane put his egg in a cup and covered it in Gillette shaving cream. He also attached two parachutes to the cup.

After the egg was taken out of the cup unbroken, Dobbs gave some credit to Gillette for the success. “Shoutout Gillette Lab.”

During Spillane’s turn in the challenge, the team revealed that they will play the Miami Dolphins on Sept. 14, Week 18: TBD; the Buffalo Bills on Oct. 5 and Dec. 14; and the Jets on  Nov. 13 and Dec. 28.

Despite Jones having his teammates doubt his method for protecting the egg, he surprised them by passing the challenge.

Jones’s method was sandwiching the egg in between two sponges and then “a whole bunch of bubble wrap” in a box.

“You know, there’s always doubters,” said Jones when Dobbs asked how he felt about his teammates not believing in him. “You got to prove people wrong. And I felt like that’s how it kind of went. But now, you know, they believe in what I had with the process.”

In his replay, the schedule revealed that New England will take on the Pittsburgh Steelers on Sept. 21, the Cleveland Browns on Oct. 26, the Cincinnati Bengals on Nov. 23 and the Baltimore Ravens on Dec. 21.
