Turns out there will still be a Belichick in Foxborough after all.

Patriots safeties coach Brian Belichick — the youngest son of former head coach Bill Belichick — is remaining with New England and will join Jerod Mayo’s staff, according to ESPN’s Mike Reiss.

Reiss noted that Belichick has a strong working relationship with Mayo, who was named the 15th head coach in franchise history last month. Belichick has been in Foxborough for eight seasons, spending the past four years as the team’s safeties coach.

It remains to be seen what Belichick’s exact role with the Patriots will be in 2024 and beyond, but he could slot right back in as the team’s safeties coach under Mayo and recently promoted defensive coordinator DeMarcus Covington.

While Brian Belichick will stick with New England, his older brother, Steve, agreed to become the defensive coordinator at the University of Washington earlier this week. Steve Belichick also held multiple assistant roles under his father in New England, while also calling plays since the 2019 season.

Just days after Mayo took over as New England’s head coach, Sports Illustrated’s Albert Breer reported that both Belichick brothers were “offered the opportunity to return” to New England’s coaching staff.

Mayo continues rounding out his staff

Brian Belichick’s reported return marked a busy day for the Patriots and their search for key personnel on Mayo’s staff.

According to CBS Sports’ Jonathan Jones, the Patriots are “targeting” former Cleveland Browns tight ends coach T.C. McCartney as their next quarterbacks coach. McCartney, 34, spent the past four years working under new Patriots offensive coordinator Alex Van Pelt.

McCartney’s potential addition stands as the latest offensive pickup for Mayo, who has tabbed Van Pelt as his OC and play caller and brought in former Giants head coach Ben McAdoo as a senior offensive assistant.

A former QB who was part of LSU’s 2007 championship team, McCartney previously coached quarterbacks with the 2019 Broncos as a part of Vic Fangio’s staff. He’s one of many products of Kyle Shanahan’s coaching tree, working under him as an offensive assistant with the Browns in 2014 before joining the 49ers as an offensive assistant/quality control coach in 2017-18.

New England is also hiring Browns assistant offensive line coach Scott Peters, according to KPRC’s Aaron Wilson. An eight-year NFL veteran, Peters began coaching with the Browns in 2020 and spent the last four seasons learning under O-line coach Bill Callahan and Van Pelt.
