Just a few days after the Patriots announced the hiring of their three top coordinators under head coach Jerod Mayo, New England is reportedly filling out the rest of its coaching staff.
According to ESPN’s Rob Demovsky, the Patriots hired Packers defensive-line coach and run-game coordinator Jerry Montgomery, who had served on Green Bay’s defensive staff since 2015.
The 44-year-old Montgomery has been Green Bay’s D-line coach and run-game coordinator for the past two seasons and could serve a similar role in New England.
Former Patriots defensive-line coach DeMarcus Covington was promoted as the team’s defensive coordinator last week, creating a vacancy at his former spot on Mayo’s coaching staff.
Montgomery, who also coached at Northern Iowa, Wyoming, Indiana, Oklahoma, and Michigan before making the jump to the NFL, stands as the latest hiring for a Patriots personnel group in a state of transition under Mayo.
Along with the reported addition of Montgomery to a staff also featuring offensive coordinator Alex Van Pelt, Covington, and special-teams coordinator Jeremy Springer, New England is also reportedly “in talks” to add former Giants head coach Ben McAdoo as an assistant coach who will assist Van Pelt on the offensive side of the ball.
New England still has more vacancies to address, however.
Former Patriots assistant coach and defensive play-caller Steve Belichick has reportedly accepted a position to serve as the defensive coordinator at the University of Washington, with former Patriots running backs coach Vinnie Sunseri expected to join Belichick in Washington under new Huskies head coach Jedd Fisch.
