Report: Patriots hire ex-Browns OC Alex Van Pelt as offensive coordinator
Van Pelt was the Browns offensive coordinator for the past four seasons. He also backed up Drew Bledsoe during his playing days.
The Patriots have hired Alex Van Pelt to be their next offensive coordinator according to Tom Pelissero of NFL Media.
Van Pelt, 53, was the Cleveland Browns offensive coordinator for the past four seasons. He also has a year of experience as an offensive coordinator in the AFC East, having held the same position with the Buffalo Bills in 2009.
“Quick intel on Alex Van Pelt, who was just hired as the Patriots OC,” Jeff Howe of The Athletic wrote. “West coast system but has versatility due to his background, great person who can establish a positive offensive culture.”
The newly hired Van Pelt also brings years of experience as a player. He played nearly a decade with the Bills as a backup quarterback. He backed up Jim Kelly and Drew Bledsoe during his time in Buffalo.
Van Pelt has had several jobs in the NFL as a quarterbacks coach, including stints with the Bills, Buccaneers, and Bengals among others.
The Browns fired Van Pelt last month. Cleveland went 11-6 this season before losing to 45-14 Houston in the Wild Card round of the playoffs. The Browns finished 10th in the league in scoring with 23.6 points per game.
The Patriots, who promoted DeMarcus Covington to defensive coordinator and hired Jeremy Springer as special teams coordinator have now filled all three coordinator spots.
