With every head-coaching vacancy across the NFL now filled, Bill Belichick looks to be out of a job for the 2024 NFL season.
But the Atlanta Falcons were reportedly not the only NFL team to express interest in hiring the legendary head coach.
According to The Athletic’s Dianna Russini, Belichick was also considered for the Washington Commanders’ head-coaching gig before the team opted to hire Dallas Cowboys defensive coordinator Dan Quinn.
Russini added that the Commanders spoke with Belichick about the position and that “he had support from some decision makers”, but Washington ultimately opted to hire Quinn instead.
Washington’s decision to go with Quinn over Belichick is steeped in irony, considering that Belichick handed Quinn arguably two of the most crushing losses in NFL history.
Quinn elevated his stock across NFL circles while serving as the defensive coordinator of the Seahawks’ legendary “Legion of Boom” defense from 2013-14 — with his final game in Seattle ending with a loss to the Patriots in Super Bowl XLIX.
Quinn went on to coach the Falcons from 2015-20, with the Patriots famously erasing a 28-3 deficit against Atlanta en route to a triumphant title in Super Bowl LI just two years later.
It seems like Quinn managed to get the last laugh this offseason over Belichick, who likely needs to sit out a season if he plans on returning to an NFL sideline in the coming years.
