Bill Belichick reportedly could go for a TV gig in 2024, coach again in 2025
“Several sources believe a stint in television could be in Belichick's future.”
MORE BELICHICK
With the Falcons passing on Bill Belichick for their head coaching position earlier this week and the 71-year-old reportedly being “a long shot” to land with the two remaining teams with a vacancy, it’s looking like he won’t be on an NFL sideline in 2024.
CBS NFL’s Jonathan Jones wrote Saturday that Belichick is “unlikely” to coach in 2024, corroborating ESPN’s Adam Schefter’s recent report.
However, Belichick still wants to coach again, perhaps in 2025, according to Jones.
“There remains a desire for Belichick to return to the sidelines,” Jones said. “He just has to do it on his terms.”
The Falcons seemingly weren’t willing to give the soon-to-be 72-year-old total control of the team the way he had it in New England. The rest of the teams searching for a head coach didn’t seem apt to do so, either, considering Belichick only interviewed with the Falcons.
While it’s difficult to fathom Belichick not working for an NFL team for the first time since the early 1970s, he might not stray too far from the sport this upcoming season.
Belichick is reportedly seen as an ideal candidate for a TV network as a studio analyst, per Jones.
“Every network would want him,” a source reportedly told Jones. “He would revolutionize media with the way he prepares.”
Despite his serious demeanor when talking to reporters and on the sideline during games, Belichick has plenty shown his personality in front of the camera on television.
His appearance on ESPN’s College Gameday when he gave his pick for the Army-Navy game at Gillette Stadium last month certainly comes to mind. Belichick sat alongside Lee Corso and talked at length about his ties to Navy through his father, who was a longtime coach for the Midshipmen.
Belichick followed in Corso’s footsteps by pulling out his own Navy helmet and putting it on his head to announce who he thought would win, doing so with a big smile on his face. The rest of the panel loved the moment and Belichick received cheers from the crowd watching on.
Perhaps the second-all-time winningest head coach in NFL history will take a step back from the coaching lifestyle for a change and go the television route before putting a headset back on again next year.
