Adam Schefter said there’s a ‘real possibility’ Bill Belichick doesn’t get a head coaching job this year

Other teams’ interest in hiring Bill Belichick does not seem as strong as it was initially thought to be.

Since parting ways with the Patriots a few weeks ago, Belichick has interviewed with just one team, the Atlanta Falcons.

On Thursday, news broke that the Falcons hired Raheem Morris as their head coach.

So, with the Falcons position filled, Seattle and Washington are the only two head coaching vacancies left.

There were eight at the beginning of this cycle.

New England replaced Belichick with Jerod Mayo. The Chargers hired Jim Harbaugh. The Raiders promoted Antonio Pierce. The Titans added Brian Callahan, and the Panthers pounced on Dave Canales.

As the Globe’s Ben Volin mentioned, there is a possibility of another job becoming open later in the process. For instance, there has been speculation that Belichick could replace Andy Reid in Kansas City should Reid choose to retire.

But, as of right now there are two teams that need a head coach and neither of them has interviewed Belichick, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter.

“There’s the real possibility that he’s not going to get any of these head coaching jobs,” Schefter said. “Now, that’s fascinating on a number of levels, but what I would say to you is this: When Tom Brady left New England in free agency there were all of two teams that were serious about signing him. The Chargers, and the Buccaneers. Two out of 32.

“And last year, when Lamar Jackson was a free agent, nobody was interested in signing him to an offer sheet,” Schefter added. “So sometimes, teams get in the way of themselves and don’t make rational decisions. And so, here we have the greatest coach of all time who is sitting there with a lack of interest which boggles my mind.”

NFL Media’s Ian Rapoport also said there’s a chance this cycle could end without Belichick having a job.

“The greatest coach of all time, the legendary coach, Bill Belichick, might not have a spot in the 2024 season,” Rapoport said. “Could he take a year off? Could he go into the media? Could he serve as a consultant?

“There are several options here. My guess is he takes a year off and ends up as the hottest coaching candidate in 2025. Either way, it does not seem like Belichick has a head coaching job this coming season.”
