ORCHARD PARK – A frightening moment in the Bills-Patriots game Sunday knocked Buffalo quarterback Josh Allen out of the game.

Allen was knocked to the ground on a helmet-to-helmet hit from Patriots cornerback Jonathan Jones in the fourth quarter.

It appeared as if Allen might have been momentarily knocked unconscious by the hit. He got up, left the game and was immediately taken to the medical tent on the sidelines. Allen was running with the ball on the play when Jones hit him to tackle him.

Jones was called for a personal foul but it was offset on the play by holding by the Bills. Backup quarterback Matt Barkley came in in his place.

After the game, Jones told reporters he didn’t intend to injure Allen and that he’d check on Allen to see if he’s OK.

In postgame comments, Bills coach Sean McDermott said he thought Jones should have been ejected. McDermott confirmed Allen is in concussion protocol.

“There’s no room in football for that,” McDermott said. “It’s a shame to see a player like Josh, or any player for that matter, go down with a hit like that.”
