Tree House Brewing eyeing Faneuil Hall as next brewery location

If approved, the site would include a brewery, distillery, and beer garden.

One of the most acclaimed independent breweries in the country has its sights set on the historic Faneuil Hall for another brewery and distillery location.

The Worcester Telegram & Gazette first reported that Tree House Brewing Company, based in Charlton, had applied for a farmer-brewery license from the Alcoholic Beverages Control Commission back in late March. It doesn’t appear that the Massachusetts brewer has met with Boston’s Licensing Board in one of their public hearings.

If approved, Tree House would take over the former Cheers replica bar and the space that once housed a Mexican restaurant, Mija Cantina, reported The Boston Globe. The Cheers bar at Faneuil Hall closed in 2020; Mija Cantina is listed as temporarily closed on Google, and it’s also not listed in the list of restaurants on Faneuil Hall Marketplace’s website.

The space would be massive and include 9,700 square feet of brewery and distillery space, as well as 6,300 square feet for an outdoor beer garden, according to term sheets collected by both the Worcester Telegram and the Globe

It isn’t immediately clear when Tree House might open in Faneuil Hall, but the term sheet said Tree House could get permit approval by late May.

Boston.com reached out to both Tree House and Faneuil Hall. The former didn’t respond, while the latter declined to comment.

The award-winning Massachusetts brewery has expanded rapidly in recent years, adding pick-up sites and tasting rooms in Tewksbury, Sandwich, and Saratoga Springs, New York. It now boasts seven locations where beer drinkers can grab Tree House brews to drink onsite or to grab to go.

One of its newest locations also includes a seasonal beer garden, storefront, and garage pickup at the Prudential Center, the brewery’s first location in Boston. Tree House had announced in 2024 that the brewing company would open a full taproom inside the Pru, but it isn’t immediately clear what happened to those plans.
