After his fourth season with the New England Patriots, Danny Amendola has experienced two Super Bowl titles as well as two conference championship losses — both at the hands of Peyton Manning’s Denver Broncos — and eaten countless Sour Patch Kids.

In an interview with Maxim’s Keith Gordon, the 31-year-old cited the the team’s blue-collar mentality, his trusted off-season workout regimen, and of course, his favorite candy as major contributing factors for success.

“My off-season work is simple,” Amendola told Gordon. “I’ve had the same formula since I was a young kid, with a few minor alterations as I’ve aged: Work out. Run. Run routes. Then hit the beach by noon — Manhattan Beach, preferably.”

The pair also chatted about New England’s incredible Super Bowl run, what it’s like to play with party boy Rob Gronkowski, and what Amendola wishes fans knew about what it takes to go out and perform each and every week.

The wide receiver said:

I wish the average football fan knew how much we run every day — it’s miles and miles of sprinting against the top athletes in the world, Monday to Friday. It seems all they want to talk about is fantasy football numbers and targets and catches. How about this: Go outside and try to keep up with the cars on the highway until you puke. And then do it again. And again. And again. Day after day. And then I’ll have your grade. I agree that they pay us well, but that’s why we do it and you don’t.
