Indianapolis brewery’s can stamped with ‘Tom Brady Sux’

Contrary to the opinion voiced on an Indianapolis brewery’s cans, Tom Brady most certainly does not suck. AP

Here’s one brewery whose suds reigning Super Bowl MVP and beer-chugging champ Tom Brady probably won’t be pounding anytime soon: Sun King Brewing Company.

The Indianapolis-based brewery practically in the shadow of Lucas Oil Stadium recently threw a little shade at Brady in the form of a born-on stamp that reads “Tom Brady Sux,’’ as Indianapolis Star Colts reporter Zak Keefer discovered yesterday.

The can of Wee Mac Ale was one of about 20,000 produced and stamped with the phrase in May, not as a calculated dig at a Colts rival, but as a throwaway jab by one employee.

“Honestly, it’s more of a joke than anything else,’’ Sun King marketing and promotions director Beth Belange said.

At Sun King, she says, phrases are often be stamped on cans along with the born-on date, not by order of management but at the whims of machine operators. For one run it might be “Tom Brady Sux,’’ and for another it might be song lyrics or a movie quote. This one was the responsiblity of an employee who goes by “Biscuit.’’

“We also have a guy named ‘cupcake,’’’ Belange adds.

Sun King is already the second-largest brewery in Indiana and will likely produce about 30,000 barrels this year, but the jab has raised its profile. Since yesterday, the brewery has fielded calls from media outlets nationwide and seen a modest increase in its social media reach.

The response from the public has been overwhelmingly positive, but the brewery has nonetheless received some “interesting’’ feedback on Facebook, Yelp and its answering machine, Belange said.

It’s also seemingly provoked a response from Charlestown-based Downeast Cider.

In the wake of the can going viral, Belange said the brewery has implemented a policy saying all stamps must be approved by her or management. And while Biscuit may be muzzled, he’s still a member of the Sun King crew.

“He was reprimanded and talked to about it, but he’s still gainfully employed at Sun King Brewing Company,’’ Belange said.
