New England Patriots

Bill Belichick and Danny Amendola were all smiles after beating the Ravens. AP

With the Patriots trailing 28-14 early in the 3rd quarter Saturday, Bill Belichick rallied his defensive players on the sideline and delivered the speech that changed the game.

“It’s just about doing our job,’’ Belichick said. “Play the defense. That’s all you gotta do.’’

Translation: Execute my game plan, or our season is over.

It’s not the most inspiring speech of all time, but it certainly worked for the Patriots. The Ravens scored just 3 more points and New England made the key plays late to win.

Of course, Belichick’s line about the Ravens doing “nothing we haven’t seen before’’ could have been a slip of the tongue regarding the Patriots own offensive game plan in the second half, which included the 4-linemen formation and this little trick play.
