Former UConn star Sue Bird is dating Megan Rapinoe
Seattle Storm point guard Sue Bird has come out as gay and is dating Megan Rapinoe of the U.S. women’s national soccer team.She disclosed the news in an interview with espnW published Thursday. “I’m gay. Megan’s my girlfriend,” Bird told Mechelle Voepel. “These aren’t secrets to people who know me.”The pair have reportedly been dating since last fall. “I don’t feel like I’ve not lived my life,” she continued. “I think people have this assumption that if you’re not talking about it, you must be hiding it, like it’s this secret. That was never the case for me.”The 36-year-old played college basketball for Geno Auriemma at the University of Connecticut. After winning two national championships with the Huskies, she was selected by the Storm as the No. 1 overall pick in the 2002 WNBA Draft. Bird also revealed that before coming out publicly, she had previously discussed her sexuality with fellow UConn star Diana Taurasi while the two were playing in Russia. She attended Taurasi and retired WNBA player Penny Taylor’s wedding in May earlier this year.
