Former Red Sox relief pitcher Mike Timlin tried his hand at color commentating this past week, as he joined play-by-play announcer Dave O’Brien in the NESN broadcast booth for six games.

After his first night, the 18-season baseball veteran reminded his Twitter followers that he’s only a rookie when it comes to sportscasting—in hopes that viewers wouldn’t be “too harsh” on him.

Turns out that wouldn’t be the case.

While some praised Timlin for predicting recent Pawtucket call-up Rafael Devers’ first home run

…other fans were not as impressed by the 51-year-old’s overall skills.

Following his final night in the booth, Timlin took to Twitter to thank O’Brien and said he had a “great time.” He also had a few words for his critics: “For everyone that commented on my work this week. Next time you FREAKING try it. #notthateasy.”
