Which obscure or mediocre Red Sox player did you irrationally like?

Debate the answer with Chad Finn and Boston sports fans at The Sports Q.

Welcome to Boston.com’s Sports Q, our daily conversation, initiated by you and moderated by Chad Finn, about a compelling topic in Boston sports. Here’s how it works: You submit questions to Chad through TwitterFacebook, email, his

Friday chat, and any other outlet you prefer. He’ll pick one each day (except for Saturday) to answer, then we’ll take the discussion to the comments. Chad will stop by several times per day to navigate. But you drive the conversation.

Which obscure or mediocre Red Sox player did you irrationally like?

I like it. The Scott Cooper All-Stars. That’s in semi-honor of the Red Sox’ two-time All Star third baseman, who happened to be an All-Star two more times than he should have because the Red Sox really didn’t have any worthy All-Stars in the early ‘90s. He was a double default All-Star. That’s what he was.

Anyway, your answer here can go one of two ways. It can be an obscure player you irrationally liked, or a player who wasn’t very good who … well, you irrationally liked.

Me, heck, all I like are obscure or even unpopular players, save for the occasional Frederic Michael Lynn. Bat-rack crasher Butch Hobson will always be my favorite Red Sox player despite his .719 career OPS. I’m still mad Chico Walker didn’t get more of a shot with the ‘80s Red Sox. I’ve also been known to favor all members of the Drew family.

I was a particular sucker for a lot of reclamation projects and discarded former prospects that Dan Duquette ran in and out of here in the last ‘90s.  You know how I feel about Pat Mahomes. I thought Midre Cummings could have hit .290 with 20 homers if he’d been a platoon bat against righties. I liked having Steve Avery – a favorite as a Brave – with the Sox even though he didn’t bring his fastball with him.

So who was it for you? Who was your Chico Walker? Lemme know in the comments. And someone had better mention Arquimedez Pozo or I don’t even know you guys anymore …
