Watch Dustin Pedroia’s sprawling, 180-degree home-plate scramble to score the game-winning run
The throw had Dustin Pedroia beat.
But somehow, in one most agile, acrobatic, and improbable plays you’ll see on a baseball field, the Red Sox second baseman juked around—and over—Tampa Bay Rays catcher Luke Maile to score from first base on a David Ortiz double in the 10th inning.
Pedroia’s mad scramble gave the Red Sox the third and decisive run in Sunday’s 3-2 win at Tropicana Field.

After dodging Maile on his first approach and ending up on the first-base side of the plate, Pedroia danced back around the tag, before finally making a sprawling effort over the catcher.
Though it appears Maile tagged Pedroia’s leg, the ball flew out of his glove in doing so. Despite the Rays’ challenge, the umpires confirmed Pedroia was safe. Maile was wearing a larger mitt at the time to catch knuckleballer Eddie Gamboa.

“I’ve seen some crazy things around home plate, but I have never, never seen something like that,” said Red Sox color commentator Jerry Remy.
Red Sox manager John Farrell was also at a loss for words.
“I don’t know what you want to call it. Dance step. Two step. Avoiding it with everything he could.”
