Blake Swihart’s Three-Run Homer Highlights Impressive Showing

There’s a reason that Blake Swihart is one of the top prospects in all of baseball: he’s pretty freakin’ good.

Swihart gave Red Sox fans a taste of why scouts rave about his bat in the Sox’ 7-6 split squad win over the Baltimore Orioles on Saturday, going 3-for-4 with a three-run homer that put the Sox up 4-0 in the top of the first. He came into the afternoon with just one other at-bat this spring.

The 22-year-old is coming off a 2014 season where he spent most of his time with the Double-A Portland Sea Dogs, hitting .300 in 92 games with 12 home runs and 55 RBIs. He also saw time in 18 games with Triple-A Pawtucket, batting .261.

Swihart’s name came up repeatedly over the winter, as the Red Sox have reportedly had conversations with the Philadelphia Phillies on a deal for southpaw Cole Hamels. The Phillies reportedly wanted Swihart included in any deal, but the Red Sox refused to part with their prized prospect.

Swihart was originally drafted by the Red Sox with the No. 26 overall pick in the 2011 MLB Draft, and has been in the Red Sox organization for the past four seasons.
