Rusney Castillo will miss at least one week of spring training with a strained left oblique, the Globe’s Nick Cafardo reports. Castillo left Tuesday’s game against Boston College with tightness in his left side.

It’s a minor setback for Castillo, whom the Red Sox signed to a seven-year contract worth $72.5 million last season. Thrust into a preseason battle for the starting center field spot with Mookie Betts (and maybe Jackie Bradley Jr. as well), Castillo will need all the opportunities he can get to prove he’s the man for the job.

Castillo batted .333 in limited action last season. With a sample size of just 40 major league plate appearances, he needs as many repetitions as possible this spring.
