Globe 10.0: What should Ortiz do?

It’s been four days since a New York Times report revealed David Ortiz tested positive for a performance-enhancing drug in 2003, but outside of a brief statement in which he confirmed that he was indeed on the infamous list and would provide some answers as soon as he got them, the Red Sox DH has not elaborated on what he might have tested positive for.

“The news blindsided me,’’ Ortiz said in the statement. “Based on the way I have lived my life, I am surprised to learn I tested positive. I will find out what I tested positive for. And, based on whatever I learn, I will share this information with my club and the public. You know me — I will not hide and I will not make excuses.’’

Ortiz has stuck to his statement despite a new revelations in a Globe story Saturday indicating that Ortiz, as well as more than 100 others who tested positive back in 2003, were notified of their positive tests in early September 2004.

With the Red Sox visiting the Yankees later this week, Ortiz is likely to face more pressure from fans and media to elaborate on what he knew and when he knew it about his positive test. In today’s edition of Globe 10.0, Bob Ryan and Dan Shaughnessy suggest several ways the Sox slugger could handle the situation.

“I’m wondering now if maybe the strategy is to just say nothing, go [Mark] McGwire on us, and let this whole thing try to fade away,” says Shaughnessy.

“That’s not going to work,” says Ryan. “If that is the strategy … Big Papi, please. Just fess up. If it’s just a supplement, nobody will be excited.

“He’s going to have to deal with it sooner or later.”
