Sox extend contract

The Red Sox have extended their player development contract with the Portland Sea Dogs through 2012, according to a statement released by the team. The deal extends the contract with Boston’s Double-A affiliate by four years, the longest extension permissible by league rules.

The Sea Dogs and Red Sox first began their affiliation on Sept. 18, 2002. Portland was affiliated with the Florida Marlins for nine years before that.

Since starting their affiliation with the Red Sox, the Sea Dogs have made several renovations to Portland’s Hadlock field to make it feel more like Fenway Park. There is a likeness of the Green Monster in left field, and the skyboxes have been renamed for former Red Sox players.

Twenty-nine former Sea Dogs players have gone on to play for the Red Sox, including Jonathan Papelbon, Kevin Youkilis, and Josh Beckett.
