Shawn Thornton threw away his skates after his final NHL game

As promised.

After more than 1,300 professional hockey games (including more than 700 in the NHL), Shawn Thornton is officially hanging up his skates — or, perhaps, throwing them out.

The former Boston Bruins winger reportedly pledged to toss his skates in the trash following his final game. And following Saturday’s farewell game with the Florida Panthers, the 39-year-old apparently followed through.

Thornton, who also got a warm sendoff from Bruins fans last week — received a touching farewell from the Florida crowd Saturday. The former enforcer will reportedly go on to work in Panthers’ business office during his retirement.
