Oh yeeeeeeeaaaahhhhh …..

The Bruins poor play, giving up leads, losing games, and piling up of injuries may have boiled over into full-fledged panic if the team lost to the last-place Buffalo Sabres on Thursday night. The game got off to a slow start with only one notable thing happening in the first period – a fight between Milan Lucic and Chris Stewart. It was the type of staged fight meant to set a tone for the game, but that mission fell short.

In the second period, the Bruins had two close calls with injuries within minutes when Brad Marchand appeared to take an elbow to the head while getting sandwiched between two Sabres. He didn’t miss a shift.

Gregorgy Campbell went down the tunnel momentarily but returned to the game after suffering what might have been a scary injury when he was racing to negate an icing and fell into the boards. He would be fine as well.

The Sabres took a 1-0 lead with Reilly Smith in the penalty box for hooking. Drew Stafford scored his first goal of the season.

Adam McQuaid netted his first goal of the season later in the second period to tie the game after receiving an excellent pass from Carl Soderberg and getting a lucky deflection off of the Sabres defenseman’s glove.

While on the power play later in the second period, the Bruins gave up a shorthanded chance that Niklas Svedberg made a big pad save on.

The Sabres regained the lead in the final five minutes of the second period and just seconds after their penalty kill expired. A poor decision to pinch by defenseman David Warsofsky lead to a 2-on-1 for the Sabres, and Dennis Seidenberg failed to do anything to stop the pass across to Tyler Ennis, who easily beat Svedberg.

In the third period, the Bruins played with increased urgency and generated many scoring opportunities. It paid off right away when Brad Marchand tied the game 2-2 just 1:20 into the third period. The assist by Loui Eriksson was the 400th of his career, and Seidenberg’s assist was the 200th of his career.

The game went to overtime and the Bruins dominated right off the bat. With the Bruins continuing to control the play in OT, the Sabres defense got caught in their own zone for over a minute until Reilly Smith found Brad Marchand wide open in front of the net. Marchand came through with his third goal of the season and second of the game to give the Bruins a much needed win.

And the Bruins rejoiced … with a collective sigh of relief.
